The word Zonta comes from the Lakota language used by the Native-American Sioux tribe meaning "honest and trustworthy". Zonta Club of ABC is the Akron, Barberton and Cuyahoga Falls branch of Zonta International. The ABC chapter of Zonta was founded on April 25 1952. Zonta is an organization which promotes the advancement of women worldwide through advocacy and service. This organization is made up of executive and professional women whose goals are to create an environment where women’s rights are human rights. These women work towards a world where there is no illiterate women, health care is always available for women and necessary resources are equal to those provided to men. According to acorn.net/zonta, the Zonta mission statement is to,

a) Improve the legal, political, economic, health, educational and professional status of women through service and advocacy;
b) Work for the advancement of understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of executives in business and the professions;
c) Promote justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms;
d) Be united internationally to foster high ethical standards, implement service programs, and provide mutual support and fellowship for members who serve their communities, their nations and the world.

The women of Zonta long for the elimination of fear resulting from violence directed at women.

Some areas the ABC chapter of Zonta is currently working in are,

-Akron Symphony Orchestra (education/Literacy)
-Akron Canton Regional Food Bank (women’s/children’s health)
-Akron Community Women’s Foundation (human/women’s rights)
-Akron Metro Parks (environment)
